Landmark of the Week
April 18-21
signs of spring
April 24-28 Loch Ness, Scotland
Landmarks will written in planners and landmark folders.
When in doubt, students should research the next landmark after the one that was shared in Challenge class.
Every week we study a landmark in Challenge. This is an opportunity for the students to practice their research and comprehension skills and to share two or three facts with their Challenge peers. Students can do this research at school if they do not have the resources at home.
If a student prints out a web page, he or she should underline or highlight one or two important facts or mark them somehow in the book (without, of course, writing in the book).
It is also wonderful if a student writes facts about the landmark or the city or country where the landmark is located. Students learn much more from writing than just printing out the information.
Pictures drawn by students are always welcome and will be hung in the classroom if the child wants that.
Books and magazines are great sources of information, as are people who have been there! Don't limit yourself to the computer!
Which week which landmark will be discussed in a particular class depends on many factors, including days missed for snow and testing, short periods of time where whole class engineering projects and/or literature studies take the place of small group Challenge, etc. Each student should know what landmarks we have already done and which one he/she needs to be researching now. Each child has a landmark folder and should know what landmark his/her group is researching that week.

Week of October 31-Nov. 4 Hunyad Castle, Romania
http://www.exploring-castles.com/draculas_castle.html
The appearance alone of Hunyad Castle is enough to strike fear into most people's hearts: I literally don't think I've seen such a terrifying structure in my life.
The castle is also intimately linked to Vlad the Impaler, our real life Dracula. Later in life, when Vlad's power waned, he was held prisoner in the dungeons of the castle. Legend goes that the imprisonment drove him further towards insanity: as he tortured rats, insects and animals, in preparation for his release.
